Trane was founded in 1885 by James Trane, a Norwegian immigrant who started his own plumbing and pipe-fitting shop in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where he designed an innovative type of steam heating system that was low pressure. James’ son, Reuben Trane, earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1910 and joined his father’s firm, where the two incorporated in 1913 as the Trane Company.
Then, in 1923, after having left the plumbing business to focus on making heating products, Reuben’s invention of the convector radiator put the family company on the map as an innovator. The company has been building on this reputation ever since and in 1982, the company purchased General Electric’s central air conditioning division, which culminated in the company’s many well-known A/C traits.
